Remembering 9/11 and Charlie Kirk

Every September 11, my heart grows heavy. 

Like many of you, I remember exactly where I was when those planes hit. 

I was in Brooklyn, less than seven miles from the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center, and I watched the smoke rise into the sky. 

That morning, 2,977 innocent lives were lost in New York City, at the Pentagon, and in Pennsylvania.

Firefighters, police officers, and ordinary citizens ran toward danger to save others. That day showed us the depths of human evil but also the heights of American courage.

This year, that grief has been made even heavier. 

Charlie Kirk, a voice for freedom and a friend of this country, was assassinated yesterday. He was shot during an event at Utah Valley University. 

Charlie grew up in the shadow of 9/11. 

He saw what happens when America is attacked, and he dedicated his life to making sure young people never forget the price of freedom. 

Through Turning Point USA, he spoke to millions, reminding them that America is a nation worth defending. He gave a new generation the courage to stand for faith, family, and free enterprise.

His loss is tragic. It hurts. 

And yet, just as the terrorists of 9/11 could not break us, those who seek to silence voices like Charlie’s will fail. America has been tested before. Each time, we come out stronger.

The best way we can honor both the fallen of 9/11 and Charlie Kirk is by carrying their torch forward. We do that when we teach our children to love this country, refuse to give in to cynicism or despair, and keep faith that our greatest days are ahead.

Charlie believed that with all his heart. And I believe it too.

Today, we mourn, but tomorrow, we continue the work. 

America’s story is not finished. The light of freedom still burns bright, and it will not be extinguished.

May the memories of those we lost on 9/11 and the memory of Charlie Kirk be a blessing and a reminder that our fight for liberty, truth, and faith is never in vain.
